Year 1

The first year equips you with the analytical tools to examine challenges in US politics and explore the political ideologies shaping the global landscape. You will build core research skills, including critical reading and structured argumentation, applicable to diverse political contexts. The curriculum introduces key theoretical frameworks underpinning political science, enabling you to critically evaluate contemporary events and debates. This foundation prepares you to engage with complex political questions at both national and international levels.

  • Module 1: America: From Watergate, Trump and Beyond | 10 ECTS / 20 UK Credits

Explore the factors driving the intense political struggle and culture war in the US. Analyze key issues like immigration and healthcare, and evaluate whether deep ideological divisions among the elite are reflected throughout American society.

  • Module 2: Britain and Europe from 1870 to the Present | 20 ECTS / 40 UK Credits

Survey British and European history, tracing the evolution from major unifications to modern integration and neoliberalism. Analyze shifting political landscapes, the welfare state, and European economic and military cooperation.

  • Module 3: Foundations of Politics and International Relations | 20 ECTS / 40 UK Credits

Study how power, authority, and institutions shape civil society and the state. Analyze theoretical frameworks to understand how international organizations embody core values like freedom, security, and justice.

  • Module 4: Political Ideologies | 10 ECTS / 20 UK Credits

Gain an introduction to liberalism, socialism, feminism, and green politics. Explore how these frameworks challenge modern narratives and continue to influence contemporary political actors and power structures.

During the Bachelor's Degree in Politics with International Relations, students will learn: 

Year 2

Focus on global governance and human rights, examining how international institutions operate and protect rights globally. You will master practical communication skills for international policy-making, learning to convey complex arguments to diverse audiences. The curriculum develops your ability to critically assess policy frameworks and international agreements. This year strengthens your interpersonal capabilities for professional engagement with global political actors.

  • Module 1: Future Directions: Research, Careers and Development | 10 ECTS / 20 UK Credits

Develop graduate skills by engaging with industry practitioners to explore career pathways in education, policy, and media. Execute a specialized individual project to prepare for professional roles in the creative or public sectors.

  • Module 2: Propaganda and Political Communication | 10 ECTS / 20 UK Credits

Examine how social media and data hacking are utilized as political weapons. Analyze communication theories through a knowledge exchange project, creating your own political artifact such as a podcast or advert.

  • Module 3: Revolutionary Change: Mass Movements, Peoples and Cultures | 20 ECTS / 40 UK Credits

Investigate how revolutionary uprisings have shaped the modern world. Analyze influential global mass movements, from the American and French Revolutions to the 1989 counter-revolutions.

  • Module 4: Understanding Global Threats: Past, Present and Future | 20 ECTS / 40 UK Credits

Identify significant contemporary political threats and international developments. Analyze how theoretical frameworks and international law address the impact of political violence on global stability.

Year 3

The final year addresses social inequalities through contemporary political theory. You will critically examine structural factors contributing to inequality and apply your skills to real-world challenges. The year culminates in an independent research project, preparing you for professional careers in public policy, international organizations, and advocacy.

  • Module 1: Dissertation | 20 ECTS / 40 UK Credits

Engage in advanced research into politics or international relations. Under the guidance of a supervisor, you will conduct an original investigation into a theme or interest of your choice.

  • Module 2: The Rise of the Nazis, the Third Reich and Beyond | 10 ECTS / 20 UK Credits

Study the social, political, and economic characteristics of the Nazi racial state. Examine the Third Reich during peace and war to understand the evolution of this historical regime.

  • Module 3: The State and Politics: Inside and Outside Parliament | 20 ECTS / 40 UK Credits

Analyze political vulnerability and the role of agencies in safeguarding society. Take a critical approach to ethical issues, considering the interaction between families, professionals, and state institutions.

  • Module 4: The Troubles: Conflict and Resolution | 10 ECTS / 20 UK Credits

Address the violently contested politics of Northern Ireland. Explore the challenges social scientists face when dealing with conflict resolution in deeply divided societies.
